Carlos Alcaraz had an amazing run at this year’s Wimbledon tournament. Spanish tennis fans weren’t the only ones thrilled; so were the producers and editors at ESPN. That’s because they were able to do their jobs without traveling. Creative Mobile Solutions Inc (CMSI) and sister company, Remote Picture Labs (RPL), continue to innovate in the field of tapeless workflow. This was their first time at Wimbledon. The team was brought in because of their experience with major international events. ESPN knew they would get top tier expertise; CMSI and RPL could also help control rising production costs, by reducing the amount of personnel who had to travel.
The goal was to innovate behind-the-scenes, providing editors access to any of the footage they would need in near-real time, while using familiar processes.
“We aim to have people immediately recognize everything when they sit down at their desks. We want everyone to be able to tell the story of the athletes and their accomplishments, without having to relearn any software, equipment, or process,” says CMSI founder Noah Gusdorff.
Over the course of several months, CMSI consulted on workflow, created both technical and process drawings, and demoed the technology. It was important that both technical and creative teams could look at and test the solutions. Grand Slam events are no place for guesswork, so planning was key.
CMSI’s equipment had a smaller footprint than ever, which reduced shipping costs, set-up time, and potential failure points. The on-site team was able to plug and play, connecting them to US team members across at least four states. Footage was synchronized seamlessly in the background. Editors and producers worked with footage in near-real time, across the dedicated and secure network connection to the CMSI RPL cloud.
The Key to the software stack proved to Avid Media Composer & Avid MediaCentral. At home, editors connected through CMSI’s multi-monitor rental hardware kits powered by HP Anywhere (formerly Teradici) for the fourteen-day event.
“We’re really excited about the CMSI Remote Picture Labs cloud,” says Gusdorff. “Our capacity is constantly expanding. Once we have the files, we can do anything anywhere.”
