For many players, their careers skyrocket in the blink of an eye. One tremendous play at the annual NBA Summer League, and a young athlete’s life is changed. Those journey-defining moments need reliable capture and replay, and that’s why we keep getting phone calls.
NBA Summer League is where a professional basketball career takes a jump shot. Fresh off the Draft, first-round picks step onto the court in an NBA jersey for the first time. Second-year players work to earn larger roles. Undrafted free agents compete for contracts. Every possession is an opportunity to impress coaches, executives, and fans watching around the world.
This summer, CMSI supported ESPN’s coverage of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, providing remote production services and RPOC (Remote Point of Capture) workflows that helped keep media moving throughout the event.
Remote Slam Dunk
The Summer League schedule is unlike almost any other basketball event. Multiple games are played each day, producing a constant stream of highlights, interviews, and feature content as production teams race to keep pace with the action.
CMSI Playbook and our reliable RPOC platform supported remote editorial workflows throughout the tournament, giving production teams rapid access to media while allowing editors to collaborate from wherever they were working. By combining onsite acquisition with cloud-enabled workflows, CMSI helped ensure content could move efficiently between the venue and remote production teams.
Built for High-Volume Production
Summer League may showcase basketball’s newest talent, but it also serves as a proving ground for production teams managing an enormous amount of content in a compressed schedule. Reliable workflows are essential for multiple functions, including:
- Preparing highlights for broadcast
- Supporting post-production
- Moving media between locations
CMSI’s remote infrastructure is designed to simplify those challenges, allowing producers and editors to spend less time managing files and more time creating content.
Supporting the Next Generation
CMSI is no stranger to supporting the next generation of talent, although we usually do it from the technology side. The NBA Summer League is a unique opportunity for broadcasters as well, with dozens of games creating an ideal environment to test new production technologies and refine emerging workflows before the regular season begins.
For CMSI, that means helping production teams evaluate new ways of working while also helping introduce tomorrow’s NBA stars to fans around the world. Being part of both journeys is one of the reasons Summer League remains one of our favorite events of the year. And no, it has nothing to do with the abundance of free team merch. That’s completely coincidental.
